Straight Up

The straight up bet on roulette covers any one number of the players choice and pays out at a rate of 35-1 the highest payout available in a roulette game.

The straight up bet is placed directly in the center of the number you wish to play.

Split

A split is a bet on roulette that allows one to gamble equally on two numbers that are next to one another on the roulette layout, splits payout 17-1.

The split bet allows players to cover two numbers along side each other on the layout and should be placed directly between the two numbers that you want to cover.

Corner

Corners are bets that cover four numbers closely situated on a roulette layout evenly and pay 8-1

Corner bets should be placed in the center of the four numbers the player wishes to bet on.

Street

A street is the name given to the roulette bet that covers three numbers in a row on the layout evenly, it pays 11-1.

Street bets should be placed furthest from the dealer on the double line near the even chance bets.

Six line

The six line bet covers as the name suggests six numbers equally and pays out at 5-1.

The sixline bet in roulette needs to be placed closest to the player and furthest from the roulette dealer on the double line in the example above on the double line between 16 and 19

The funniest difference is that the version of roulette that is played in Europe (and a few US casinos) with a single zero is actually called American Roulette but for the sake of this article I am going to refer to the version played in Europe as European roulette and the version played in the USA that uses a double zero as American Roulette.

The major difference between the two is the US version of roulette has an extra zero added which is actually two zeros (00) also known as the double zero wheel.

As you can see in the image above, the American roulette has both a zero and a double zero. There have been many a story as to the origin of roulette, The game’s history can be traced back to as early as the tenth century. In the Caucasus, parchments have been found that show similarities to the current number sequence found on roulette wheels today. Legend has it that roulette in its earliest form was invented by a Chinese monk in the fourteenth century, and then introduced to Europe by a Jesuit missionary.

Other legends contrary to popular opinion are that the french master mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was inventor. This however is not true but he did make braking discoveries with one of the first scientific contributions as to the theory of probability but there is no link between him and the game of roulette.

The very first primitive form of roulette appeared in Italy toward the end of the 17th century, as there was law prohibiting gambling and games of chance. In those times the rich aristocracy could be found gambling illegally in each others villas (casini) (as we call them today) . The word casini is the Italian word for small house was then used as the name for these gambling houses that hosted the various forms of games of chance. Germany and France set up casinos in the mid 18th century followed soon by Monte Carlo and Baden Baden where gaming started to flourish.
