The Basics of Betting

So, how do the betting rounds work? Poker is, after all, a gambling game. In most games, you must ‘ante’ (an initial bet the amount varies by game), just to get dealt cards. After that players bet into the ‘pot ‘ the pool of money collected in the middle. At the end of the hand, the highest hand (that hasn’t folded) wins the pot. Basically, when betting gets around to you (betting is usually performed in a clockwise order), you will have one of four choices to either:

• Call – if you call, you have to bet enough to match what all the other players have bet individually since you last bet an example of calling would be you bet 50c last time you bet in the same pot and same betting round and someone else called your 50c and increased (“Raised”) your bet by an additional $1 that would mean that you would need to bet $1 to call. (usually used on an uncertain hand)
• Raise – To raise means means to increase the bet so firstly you would need to call any previous bets since the last time you bet then increase “Raise” between the limits set so using the prior example if you wanted to raise the last bet you would call the $1 and raise the bet by $1 thereby placing $2 in the pot.(usually used on a probable winner.)
• Fold – When you fold you retire from the hand and have no way of winning any money from the pot but it also means that ypu don’t have to put money into the pot neither. (used when you have a bad odds hand or losing hand.)
• Check – Pass your turn to bet.

Poker Terminology

All in: have no more chips/money left on the table and still want to be in to win; if there are other players still in the round a separate pot will be formed of which you can only win.

Betting Round: rounds in poker begin either with the highest/lowest cards out on the table or in turn rotating clockwise depending on the game and house rules with the person to the left of dealer betting first, a round is only completed when everyone has finished betting and a winner/winners(split pot-tied hand)are determined.

Cards Speak: if say what you have (declare) and the dealer turns your cards and sees a bigger hand than what you thought you had cards speak mean that the visual hand is larger than the hand you verbally declared.

Down Card: A card dealt face down also known as the ‘hole card’ and down and dirty.

Natural Hand: Consists of a poker hand made up of no wild cards.

Rank: Is the value of the card

Showdown: Revealing of hands to determine a winner.

Up Card: A card dealt face up revealing it value.

Big Blind: A designated amount that is placed by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt. (Players joining a game in progress must post a Big Blind, but may do so from any position.)

Bullets: A pair of Aces.

Bump: To raise.

Buy-In: The minimum amount of money required by a player to sit down in a particular poker game.

Check-Raise: When a player first checks and then raises in a betting round.

Turn: In flop games, this is the fourth card dealt. It is the third round of betting.

The players’ three cards together with the two communal cards gives each player a five card poker hand. To receive cards the player must place three bets of equal value and at least equal to the table minimum on three bet boxes indicated on the table layout. The player then is dealt three cards and the dealer takes two communal cards face down.

Prior to the dealer exposing the first communal card and after looking at their three cards the players have the option of taking back their first bet or indicating they want to ‘let it ride’ this means all three bets stay up. The same will happen again ie. you have the option to pull back the next bet if you desire or Let-It-Ride then the dealer will turn the last card revealing your 5 card poker hand as the dealers other card is also a communal card payments are made according to fixed odds see the table to the right as the dealer does not have cards to compete with and are paid those odds for each withstanding bet, your last bet on Let-It-Ride has to stay up and cannot be taken back.

How to Play Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker uses a standard 52-card deck. The game allows the player two wagering options :

1. Only Playing against the Dealer
2. Playing against the Dealer and on the value of their own hand (Pair Plus)

1. When playing against the Dealer, the player is wagering (Ante and Play wagers) that their hand will be higher in rank than the Dealer’s hand. If the player has a hand higher in rank than the Dealer’s qualifying hand of Queen or higher, the player will be paid 1:1 on both the Ante and Play wagers and will also be subject to Ante bonus payouts if their hand was a straight or higher.

2. When wagering on the hand’s value (pair plus wager), the player’s hand is not compared to the House’s hand. The player is wagering in the hopes that they will receive a hand of a pair or higher in rank. If the player receives a pair or higher, they will receive payment at the appropriate odds that correspond to the winning hand.

In three card poker the bet nearest the dealer is the pair plus bet normally an optional bet, house rules vary but in general you can make an independent bet on the pair plus which is in no way linked to the ante it must of course comply with the posted table minimum bet and maximum bet as well as be posted prior to the player seeing their cards. Some casino’s allow a single bet to be wagered with only the pair plus bet placed and others don’t.

The ante bet in three card poker is the middle bet, it must be placed prior to seeing your cards and is the base bet for the play bet, some casino’s insist that this bet is placed while others don’t, once again casino house rules come into effect.

The bet closest the player is the play bet unlike the pair plus and ante bets the play bet only comes into play once you have seen your cards, one should place this bet this if holding Q/6/4 or higher, only an equal amount to the posted ante may be placed.

Despite what dealers may tell you, players should play any three card poker hand with Q/6/4 and higher to obtain the best results odds and percentage wise.

Many players think that the pair plus bet is where they win all the money, this is not the case in 3 card poker as the table below indicates in fact the Ante/Play bet is a better bet for the player while it still loses it does so at a leaser percentage.
