Glossary, terminology, jargon, slang and gambling terms used in casino’s with the meaning and definitions of the words explained:

“A”

A Bite : Request made by a player for a loan. Also ‘marker’

Ace : In card games has value of one or eleven and ranks higher than any other single card or a single Die showing one spot.

Aces : In poker refers to a pair, the highest pair. In Craps is when a total of 2 is rolled. Also ‘two crap / two craps ‘, ‘ snake-eyes’,'bullets’. In Blackjack have a value of 1 or 11, always split aces when playing blackjack.

Ace-Deuce : In Craps is when a combined total of 3 is rolled with the dice i.e. a one and a two. Also ‘three crap / three craps ‘

Across : A bet in craps that covers all the ‘place bet’ numbers 4,5,6,8,9,10 excludes the point by default but can be bet including the ‘point’ if specified. Also ‘Numbers across’

Action : The amount of money bet or wagered. In poker refers to the amount of money in the pot or pool. In casino floorperson terms the amount of the total bets ‘active’ on a table or on the casino floor, depends on the context of the sentence.

Action Jackson : A player who is always gambling 24/7.

Active : A bet that is still ‘live’ and has ‘action’ that is it still is in play with a chance to either win or lose.

Active Player : A player that still has cards still in play with a chance to win or lose.

Add-on : The chance to buy additional chips in a tournament or poker table.

Agent : A player who works with either the casino establishment itself or dealers or other casino employees either by fixing games, cheating or playing for the ‘house’ when and as needed. Also someone who lures players to a rigged game for a fee or commission.

Aggregate Limit : Total payout liability of the casino during one hand.

Aggregate Winnings : The cumulative total of winnings.

All-in : Or ‘Going All-In’ to bet all your remaining chips on the table, not having any remaining or allowable funds available for the rest of the hand in poker.

All or Nothing : A ticket purchasable for Keno that only pays if all your numbers are drawn or if none of your numbers are drawn.

Allowable odds : The maximum odds a casino will allow one to take.

American Wheel : A roulette wheel found mostly throughout the US with 38 numbers and includes a different wheel number layout with an additional number added being the “00″ also known as a double zero wheel which differs from the ‘European Roulette wheel’ which only has one zero and all payouts still pay the same. The American roulette wheel offer odds far worse than its counterpart.

Anchor : The player who has the last decision at a blackjack table usually the player in the last seat or ‘box’ thereby holding the anchor role. Also ‘Last base’

Ante : The initial bet made at poker tables normally a fixed amount. ‘Ante Up’ refers to placing that first bet.

Any : The ‘Any craps bet’.

Any Craps : A ‘one roll bet’ that can be made at the craps table that pays 7-1 should a 2, 3, 12 roll on the very next roll. This bet is usually placed on the ‘Come out roll’ as insurance for a ‘Passline bet’. Also ‘Crap check’

Any Seven : One roll bet that can be place on the dice table if a 7 rolls on the next throw of the dice pays 4-1 odds. Also ‘Big red ‘

Apron : The outer most part or skirt of a table. Part of a delears uniform in some casinos to reduce the wear and tear on trousers.

“B”

Baccarat : Casino card game in which the winning hand totals closest to 9, excluding all 10 units.

Back Line : Refers to the ‘Passline‘ bet

Backside : Don’t pass bets against numbers repeating before a ‘seven‘ is thrown. Also called the ‘Backline‘.

Back up : To take odds on a bet.

Banker : Some card games allow players to take on the role of the casino and offer a choice to be ‘Banker‘ the player then takes responsibility of the bets on the table placed against him usually for a commission.

Bankroll : The total amount a punter is willing to risk monetarily over a period of time. Can also be a gamblers starting money or funds available or Casino money kept in the tray directly in front of the dealer.

Barber Pole : A stack of chips in which the denominations are in random order.

Bar on the first : A bar on one of the craps numbers, either the two sixes (6/6), the two aces (1/1), or the ace deuce (1/2), if the number barred appears on first roll, it is a stand off for the wrong betters and the money rides for a decision on a later roll.

Bar the 12 : Text printed on the ‘Don’t Passline‘ and ‘Don’t Come‘ meaning that should a 12 roll the bet will ‘Push‘ , ‘Stand Off‘, have ‘No Action‘ or in effect have no winning or losing result – a tie.

Barred : Being banned by the casino, they will no longer accept action from a ‘punter‘ that has been barred.

Base : Player’s betting position at the table. First base is the position farthest to (1st/ 2nd/3rd) the Dealer’s left. Second base is the position directly in the center. Third base is the position farthest to the Dealer’s right dealer position, on the craps table on either ends where the bets are payed. First base would be on the left hand side and second base would be on the right hand side when standing on the ‘stick persons‘ side facing the ‘box person‘

Basic strategy : The best odds established for any particular casino game, usually referred to in blackjack in which the best odds for each individual hand has been calculated.

Basket : A roulette bet that covers 0,00,1,2,3 equally which looks like a basket.

Bet : A ‘Wager‘ , the event of placing an item of worth then making a predicted guess at the outcome of a random event.

Bingo : A game in which numbers are randomly drawn and checked off on cards as they are drawn with the winner being the person who completes the stipulated positions first then announces bingo. Black Book : A compiled list of players banned (‘barred‘) from casino’s usually due to cheating but the reasons do vary.

Blackjack : Popular card game played in casinos with the object being to beat the dealer by getting closest to 21 without going over 21. When a player gets a natural 21 i.e. with two cards an ace with a 10,J,Q,K they get paid at odds of 3 to 2 eg. $10 would pay $15. Also ’21′ or ‘black jack’. See Blackjack

Blind bet : A bet made without seeing the cards.

Bluff : Playing a losing poker hand as though it is a winning hand by pretending it’s a winning hand.

Break : In blackjack, to draw cards totaling more than “21″. Such a hand loses automatically.

Board : The cards in poker that are dealt face up that are shared or ‘community cards‘.

Bones : Dice that are used in Craps.

Box : In blackjack the area that you place your bet on. In craps, the non betting portion of the layout, in front of the ‘payroll‘. The position the casino supervisor sits when watching a craps game. Also ‘Boxman’ , ‘Boxperson’

Box Cars : In dice, Twelve crap (6/6). Also ‘midnight’

Break-even point : The point at which your wins and losses equal each other after a period of play.

Buck : A ‘bet‘ or ‘wager‘ of $100.

Bug : The joker card.

Bullet : An Ace card.

Bullets : A pair or more of Aces.

Bump : To ‘Raise‘ increase a bet.

Burn card : Card or cards that are removed from play usually the first card or first few cards on the top of the deck used in poker and occasionally in blackjack.

Bust : A losing hand going over 21 in blackjack.

Button : A small plastic marker that is used in poker to move from player to player after each hand to show the dealer position.

Buy bets : An alternative to ‘place bets‘ where a player pays 5% vigorish on the amount wagered.

Buy in : To exchange cash or funds to purchase chips.

C & E : A bet that is available on the dice table that covers ‘Any craps’ and ‘Yo’ (eleven) evenly if yo rolls the total bet is multiplied by 7 and if a crap number rolls it pays the total bet multiplied by 3. Also ‘Craps Eleven’

Cage : The cashiers area where they handle various transactions in the casino. Also ‘Cashier’

Call : To match the current bet.

Call Bet : A bet that is taken verbally or a proposition bet not marked on the layout.

Cane : The craps ‘Stick’ used by the ‘Stick person’ to retrieve the Dice after a throw.

Cap : A percentage of a bet that is taken or placed separately. Also ‘Vig’ or ‘Vigourish’

Capping : As a dealer, placing money to the top of a bet or payoff rather than beside it.

Card Counting : Methods used to improve players odds by counting down cards. See ‘Card Counting’

Card Shark : A player that is an expert at card games and could use cheating as a tactic to win.

Caribbean Stud Poker : A popular casino poker game in which the player gets five cards only and plays them against the dealers cards and winning bets get paid according to established odds. See ‘Caribbean Stud Poker’

Cash change : When monetary value is changed for gaming chips.

Cashier : The place that handles various transactions in the casino. Also ‘Cage’

Casino Advantage : The edge that a casino has on all games over the gamblers, can be represented by a percentage.

Center Action : In craps, the bets that the stickman places includes all ‘proposition bets’ and ‘hardway bets’. Also ‘Center bets’

Change Color : The changing of chips or ‘Checks’ from one base denomination to another. eg 20 $5 chips to 1 $100 chip. Also ‘ Change’ , ‘cash out’ , ‘color up’

Chase : The act of trying to get ones lost money by placing more money to acheive your goal of getting your money back. Also ‘Chasing your money’

Cheat : Someone who riggs or breaks the rules of a casino game in order to win.

Check : In poker, choice to take no betting action. See ‘Checks’

Checks : See ‘Chips’ below.

Chips : The round items that are used instead of cash in casinos. Also ‘Checks’

Chip Tray : The tray that holds chips.

Cold : A term that things are not going well for players.

Cold Table : A table at which people are losing and the run is benefiting the casino.

Color : Used in reference to the chip association to a value and color.

Color Up : The changing of chips from one denomination to another. eg 20 $5 chips to 1 $100 chip. Also ‘Color Change’

Column : A wager in roulette that pays 2 –1 and covers any one of 12 numbers in a vertical column.

Come Bet : A bet that can be made on a craps table that works similar to the ‘Passline bet’ other than it can only be bet once a point is established.

Come Line : The area on a dice table that is allocated to ‘Come Bets’.

Come Out Roll : The roll that establishes a ‘Point’ on a dice/craps table.

Comps :The rewards a casino gives to players as a complementary service can be in many forms usually free or discounted hotel rooms, drinks, dinner or cash back plans.

Community cards : Cards in poker that are shared amongst all the players.

Contract bet : A bet, which may not be reduced or removed once a point has been established for it. (Pass line bets are contract bets).

Corner : A bet in roulette that covers four neighboring numbers equally on the ‘layout’, pays 8-1.

Courtesy line : The line between the 2nd and 3rd dozen where the 0-00 split wager may be placed as a convenience to players at the far end of the table pays 17-1.

Cowboys : Pair of Kings in poker games.

Crap : In craps, crap numbers are 2,3 and 12. The numbers that lose on a ‘Come out roll’.

Crap Check : A bet available on dice/craps tables that pays 7 to 1 if a ‘Crap’ number rolls, normally used by punters to cover ‘insure’ their ‘passline’ bets.

Craps : A popular casino game that is played using the total of two die as the gambling reference where various wagers can be placed prior to the rolling the die. The game is dealt by a crew of staff which include a ‘boxman’ a ‘stickperson’ and two ‘base’ dealers.

Crap Out : The term used for losing a bet on the ‘Come out roll’ when a ‘crap’ is rolled.

Crew : The team of dealers that work together to deal a dice game, made up of four staff includes a ‘boxman’,'stick person’ and two ‘base’ dealers / payoff’s.

Crocodile : The opposite end of the dice table where the shooter is encouraged to throw the dice against in order to complete a roll. Also ‘Wall’ or ‘Back wall’

Croupier : A French term meaning casino dealer. Interested in ‘getting a job as a croupier working on a cruise ship?’

Cut : Divide the cards so that a fair game can be played as the person dividing the cards did not shuffle them. Also ‘cutting’, ‘cutting the deck’, ‘cut the deck’

Cut Card : A special card used to divide the deck when ‘cutting’ usually made out of plastic. The card indicating the time to shuffle and the card used to cut the deck by the player.

Cutting : The method of proving or verifying chips used by dealers.

“D”

Dark Side : In craps, the betting against the shooter by betting against the shooter rolling the point.

Deal : The act of giving out cards to players includes the acts giving of gambling objects in other casino games too.

Dealer : The person designated or assigned to give out the cards or casino gambling objects. See ‘Learn to deal‘. Interested ‘get a job as a casino dealer, work on board a cruise ship?’

Designated Dealer :The person designated as dealer for that round in poker games even though they may often not actively deal the cards out.

Deuce : A two in various casino games. Also ‘Deuces’ , ‘Ducks’

Dice : The plural of ‘Die’, slang term for the game of ‘craps’.

Dice bowl : The container on the game which holds Dice which are not in play, but which are available for use.

Die : Singular term for the square objects in use when playing dice/ craps, have six sides with numbers 1 through 6 and every aspect of them should be equal and balanced.

Dirty money : Gaming checks from losing wages which have not been returned to the bank roll.

Dirty stack : A stack of chips where different colors or different values are mixed together.

Discards : Cards that have already been played and are no longer in use.

Discard Rack : In blackjack, an L shaped device situated at the right-hand side of the table. The discard rack is used to hold the cards previously in play prior to the next shuffle.

Disclose : To open, expose, reveal. As in disclosing a card.

Dolly : The perspex marker used to mark the last number that rolled on the ‘layout’ in roulette.

Donk : Short for DONKey a newbie poker player betting incorrectly with poor knowledge of the game.

Don’t Come Bet : A bet in Craps the player places against the roll of an established number. Opposite ‘Come bet’

Don’t Pass : The ‘shooter’ in craps does not make/roll the ‘point’ or rolls a ‘crap’ on the ‘Come out roll’.

Don’t Passline : A bet in Craps in which players have the opportunity to place against the ‘shooter’ before a ‘Point’ is established. Opposite ‘Passline’

Double Down : An option that Blackjack allows to make an additional bet equal to the amount of the original wager on any two original cards. When a player doubles, he receives only one (1) additional card. Best played when player has a total of eleven with two cards dealt.

Double down for less : See ‘Double Down’ an option that lets you increase your wager for an amount less than you have bet.

Double Odds : A form of permissible odds available in Craps where punters have an option of ‘taking odds’ in this instance they may take double the bet they wagered on the pass or don’t pass lines. These odds are calculated so as to be the ‘True Odds’ of a particular ‘point’ being rolled.

Down Behind : The term used when ‘Lay bets’ and ‘Don’t Come’ bets that lose get taken down.

Down Card : Cards in various casino games including blackjack and poker where the cards are dealt face down and are unexposed.

Down With Odds : In craps when a player has a ‘place bet’ that wins along with a ‘come bet’ that comes onto the same number, they have a choice of taking the ‘allowable odds’ on that new come bet and removing the ‘place bet’ which is then called going down with odds.

Dozen : A bet that covers twelve number in Roulette, that pays 2 to 1. Three of such dozens exist in roulette, first dozen includes the numbers 1-12, the second dozen covers numbers 13- 24 and the third dozen includes numbers 25 through 36.

Dragging : Taking money from a bet before the cards are dealt.

Draw : When a player or the dealer wishes to exchange or receive additional cards.

Drop : Cash, credit or any funds that are accumulated.

Drop Box : The box the casino dealer places cash, credit or any funds that are generated into.

Ducks : Slang term for a pair of two’s. Also ‘Deuces’

“E”

Ear : The corner of a playing card when it is bent and noticeable.

Easyway : In Craps when the total of the dice are not made up of a pair of numbers and only when it is possible to roll a pair i.e. 1 and 3 total 4 and 4 would be easy but if four came the hardway it would be with 2 and 2 (a pair of numbers). Opposite ‘Hardway ‘

Edge : The advantage over a gambler. See ‘House Edge ‘

Even Chance Bet : Bets that pay even money that is 1:1 or $20 for $20

Even Money Bet : When the payout amount equals the bet amount.

Expected Win Rate : An amount that is meant to be won based on theoretical win percentages and estimates.

Eye in the sky : The cameras watching over the casino and its games, The video camera surveillance.

European Wheel : A roulette wheel found mainly outside of the US that does not include the double zero as the wheel only contains 37 numbers and ’00′ is excluded, the numbers are in a different order but all the bets still pay the same, making the odds better for casino punters.

Face Cards : Slang for cards with a value of ten, mainly as all have ‘Bar’ the 10 have pictures with faces on the cards. Also ‘Picture‘ , ‘Monkey‘

Face Up Blackjack : A variation of the regular blackjack game where the dealer takes ‘Pushes‘ / ties but in exchange shows the ‘Down Card‘.

False Cut : A ‘Cut‘ that looks to be legit but only appears to be as it is actually a trick made to look real.

False shuffle : A ‘Shuffle‘ that looks to be legit but only appears to be as it is actually a trick made to look real.

Family pot : When all players at a poker table are still actively involved in a betting round.

Field : A bet in craps that covers the 2,3,4,9,10,11,12 should one of those numbers roll you win even money the two and twelve pay double or even triple in some casinos.

Fifth street : In seven card stud poker, the third betting round is refered to as fifth street as punters have five cards in hand. In texas hold em poker, fifth street is the fifth card on the board and the starts the final betting round.

Firing : When a punter is on a ‘roll‘ and is betting in excess of the norm while winning, probably comes from firing on all cylinders.

First Base : In ‘blackjack‘, the person who is playing in the spot on the table who usually has the first decision.

Fish : A novice poker player that does not full grasp the concept of betting correctly yet.

Fishing : In poker, staying in a betting round when you should have ‘folded’ but you are trying to pick up that last card that would really complete your hand and make it stronger normally punters fish for ‘straights‘ and ‘flushes‘.

Fix : To rig a casino game in order to win using cheating as your means.

Flat bet : The base bets made in craps on the line, DC, come and dont lines, even money payoff.

Floor : The entire gambling area in a casino.

Flop : In Texas hold em poker, the first of three cards dealt face up in the center of the table which are shared ‘Community cards‘.

Flush : A Poker hand that consists of all the cards being the same suite i.e. all Hearts, all Diamond, all Spades or all Clubs.

Fold : A choice that a player has in poker when they want to exit a hand and no longer want to participate during the round.

Four of a Kind : A Poker hand consisting of four cards with the same numeral value eg. 4 ‘Aces‘.

Fourth street : In 7 card stud poker, refers to the second round of betting is named fourth street because players have four cards at hand. In Texas hold’em poker, fourth street is the fourth card on the board and it starts the third betting round.

Free Odds Bet : A bet that is made either behind the ‘pass/don’t passline‘or ‘Come / Don’t come‘ that pays the player the ‘true odds’ of the chance of winning or losing.

Front Line : Refers to the ‘passline‘ bet on craps games. Also ‘front side’ ‘ line’ ‘pass’ ‘ passline’

Front Money : Money that has been deposited, normally at the cashier and can be withdrawn against usually via ‘Markers‘.

Full Boat : A Poker hand that consists of three cards with the same numeral value and two of the same numerical values eg. 777 + AA will be called sevens over Ace’s. Also ‘Full house’, ‘Boat’ See Poker Hand Ranking chart

Full House : A Poker hand consisting of three cards with the same value and two of the same value eg. 6,6,6 + 2,2 will be called sixes over two’s. Also ‘Full Boat’ See Basic Rules of Poker

Inside : In craps refers to the bet table numbers in particular the numbers 5,6,8,9 bets are made in multiples of $17 if the ‘point‘ is not on any of the inside numbers.

Inside Bets : In roulette an inside bet is a bet either on a ‘straight up‘,’split‘,’corner‘,street‘ or a ‘six line‘ basically any bet that pays higher 2-1. Opposite ‘outside bet’. In craps refers to the bet table numbers that the dealer places for you on the ‘layout‘.

Inside straight : In Poker, an inside straight is a partial straight with four cards in hand with only one way to make a straight eg. 1,2,3,5 in poker hand need a 4 to complete the straight. If drawn it is referred to as drawing an inside straight.

Inspector : A staffing position, job available for the more experienced dealers that are no longer required to deal but instead watch over or supervise casino games and dealers. Some casino’s utilize dealer-inspectors which requires the inspectors to deal on occasion and some establishments make use of dealers to inspect games. Insurance : A side bet option that can be made in blackjack that lets a player bet half or less their original wager, should the dealer get blackjack insurance pays 2-1. Can also used as a term for any bet that covers an original wager.

Hand : Refers to the cards that a player holds or is in ownership of, or anything that occurs during a card game between shuffling of the deck.

Hard Hand : A blackjack hand that has a possibility of busting i.e. a hand total of 12 or over containing no ace’s is a hard hand. Opposite ‘Soft hand ‘

Hawking : Following the Dice visually to the opposite side of the table.

Hi Side : In craps refers to proposition bets on the 2 and the 12 only.

Hi Lo : In craps, a one roll, split ‘proposition’ bet placed on the highest number 12 and the lowest number 2.

Hi Lo Yo : In craps, a one roll bet, that divides equally (‘proposition bet’) placed on the highest number 12 and the lowest number 2 and a ‘Yo’ 11.

Hit : An option a player has in blackjack that enables him to receive another card to his total. The card received is also known as the hit.

Hook : In dice/craps makes reference to the corners of the table where the players stand and is also a position at which a player can stand at.

Hop Bet : A ‘proposition bet’ available in a craps game in which you can bet on the unique roll of the dice, it is placed via a verbal ‘call bet’ which does not have a corresponding spot available to be placed on the dice table eg. hop 2-2 would place a one roll bet on the dice rolling 2,2 the very next roll.

Horn Bet : A horn bet is a ‘proposition bet’ available in a craps game that equally covers 2,12,11 and 3. It pays according to what rolls and is a ‘one roll bet’.Also ‘Horny bet’

Horn high : A horn high bet is a ‘proposition bet’ available in craps that covers the three of the ‘horn bet’ numbers equally and has another larger amount placed on one of the numbers which is double that of the equal amount placed on the other numbers eg. Horn high ‘Yo’ would cover $1 on 12,2 and 3 with $2 placed on the High number being 11 (‘yo’) Also ‘Horn Hi’, ‘Horn Hi yo ‘,’Horn Hi Aces’ ,’ Horn Hi Midnight’

Hole Card : The hole card is the dealers card that is dealt face down in a blackjack game and is only exposed once all the gamblers have completed playing their hands. Some casino’s make use of a ‘mirror’ that is called a ‘tech art system’ that allows the dealer to view the down card with minimal exposure by cards that have small symbols on the 10 value cards and the aces, the dealer also has no idea of what the value down card is.

Hot : Refers to a player on a lucky streak or ‘run’.

House : Refers to anything regarding the gaming establishment.

House Edge : The odds advantage the casino, poker room or gaming establishment enjoys over it’s gamblers.

House Rules : The local rules pertinant to a casino, poker room or a gaming establishment these could be posted on a wall within the casino or may just be rules enforced by the staff.
